Individual city and unincorporated county governments can set up a localized Plans Gallery, and we also provide a statewide Gallery including our entire database of plans. This gallery is available publicly for anyone to browse, filter, and look for ADU designs. Designers do have the option to show their plans only where they’ve been pre-approved – in that case, those plans won’t show up in the statewide Gallery.
Anyone is welcome to browse the gallery for inspiration, connect with designers to inquire about buying plans or hiring them, and reach out to prefabricated ADU companies to inquire about buying a unit.
Pre-approvals on the statewide gallery #
Because the statewide gallery isn’t localized and every location has different permitting requirements, it is not possible to mark site-built plans as pre-approved in the statewide Gallery. However, all prefabricated ADU plans in our database are required to be certified by either the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) or the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and can be considered pre-approved across all of California, and are marked as such in the statewide Gallery.
Buying plans and hiring designers from the statewide gallery #
All plans on the statewide Gallery are available for use across the state – but not all designers will be available for support services in your area. (Support services include tasks like site planning and permitting application support) We recommend that you confirm what is included when purchasing plans from a designer.
Why just California? #
Users across the United States are welcome to browse the statewide Gallery for inspiration, but it is currently limited to California. Users in other states could likely purchase site-built plans to use as a starting point, but these designs are specifically created to work with California laws and standards. Some prefabricated ADU companies will sell units in multiple states, but you should check with the individual company to confirm.
